    My "Lost" Dog

Last night, as I'm driving home from work, I get a call from my kid. "Has anyone called you recently? Because the dog has gotten out and we can't
  • 03
find her, and your number is on her tag." No one had called. I arrive home and immediately join the search. At this point it's about 7pm.
  • 04
We search. We get neighbors involved in the search. We get people we don't even know out searching.
  • 05
(At one point, a woman I've never met pulls up to me and says, "We're out looking for a dog." I say, "I know, it's my dog. Thank you for helping!")
  • 06
By around 9pm it is full dark. We keep searching. We get a report from a neighborhood Facebook group that the dog was
  • 07
spotted on someone's ring camera. We search in that area, but still no luck. We get another report that someone caught her on video in another neighbor's
  • 08
driveway. I get permission to search that neighbor's yard. Can't find the dog. It's now 1am. I've been searching for six hours.
  • 09
I finally give up at 2:30am. I set an alarm for 5:15am -a little before sunrise - so I can resume the search. This morning, I trace the route of a creek that runs
  • 10
through my neighborhood to where it feeds into the river, thinking maybe my dog was wandering along the creek bed. Nothing.
  • 11
My wife prints flyers and I start posting them around the neighborhood. We call the police department and animal control.
  • 12
At around 8:30 this morning, I go to check another neighbor's yard. While I'm out, I look over the fence into the property I had checked at 1am... and
  • 13
there's my dog, laying in a sunny spot like the queen of the world. I have no idea where she was hiding but she was probably never more than
  • 14
50 yards from my front door. Meanwhile, I probably logged six miles on foot and another ten wandering the neighborhood in my car.
  • 15
Obviously, I'm thrilled we found her, but what a stupid evening.

ScheduleSame258 She was probably searching along with you guys going, "What are we looking for guys?"

PinkyLeopard2922 This reminds me of a news story where I think some woman joined up with a search party looking for a missing person. It was her. The person they were searching for was her.

Classybroker1 Went camping with my dog and he escaped. Ran after him for 3 hours shouting through a campsite. Gave up and as soon as I go back to me tent, he sprints in ahead of me and lies in bed. So frustrating but I love them

ArticcaFox And that's why you put trackers on them

Remarkable_Inchworm OP Yeah, lesson learned there. She's a (mostly) indoor dog and mostly blind.
  • 23
She sometimes needs assistance finding her way from the living room to her food bowl. Where's she gonna go, right? Dog GPS thing being acquired today.
  • 24
HomersDonut 1440 We learned long ago that you stop chasing them after 20 minutes. Drop some of your clothes (unwashed) where you last saw them or where you think they went. They'll wander back, smell you, and stay there. It works nearly every time.
  • 25
Remarkable Inchworm OP Would have worked with our last dog. If she got out, all we really needed to do was open the car door. She'd be so excited to go for a ride she'd hop right in.
  • 26
This dog requires a bit more supervision. She's blind, but even before she was blind she didn't have a strong sense of self-preservation. It's really a wonder she didn't get hit by a car.
  • 27
EmilyAnne1170 I was afraid you were going to say she was at home under the bed the whole time. Same outcome, pretty much.
  • 28
Remarkable_Inchworm OP I suspect she had squeezed under the neighbor's deck or some other similarly tight space for the evening... she was pretty dirty when I found her.
